Introduction

Your here to learn more about a San Diego probate appraisal. Hi, I'm Kim Ward, Author of What to do when you're responsible for real estate a loved on leaves behind. Estates are appraised by San Diego probate referees, who are appointed by the State Controller to determine the fair market value of the San Diego probate assets.

The fair market value includes mortgages and other debts, which typically results in an appraisal of the property that is higher than the actual equity that the deceased owned in the property. That is good news for you, the estate representative, because that is how the statutory fees and all other expenses associated with the probate are paid by the estate with the remaining proceeds being distributed to the beneficiaries.

Probate referees receive a fee based on .001 percent of the all assets of the estate that have been appraised. What that means, to you, is that if the San Diego probate property is appraised at $600,000, the probate referee will be paid $600 by the estate for the appraisal.
